I spent 12 years as an active duty Army medic. Afterward, I became a nurse and started working at a civilian hospital. When veterans passed under my care, I would personally ensure that the body was given its Final Salute and honored by draping the veteran in the American flag. I inquired if this was something my hospital did, because I know it is common place in the VA hospitals. It is not. I have started reaching out to the chaplain at my personal hospital and different veterans organizations to ensure that every veteran that passes in our hospital will have this honor available to them. Right now we are in the baby steps phase, but the higher ups in my hospital are curious and seem eager to help. I am working on getting non-profit status to make this a charitable organization. I am hoping this catches on and becomes a system wide, and eventually country wide custom.

I'm a 12 year Army combat medic with 2 stents in Iraq, the first one occurring on my 23rd birthday, March 19 2003. I got out in 2012 and went to school for nursing and ended up in a Neuro/Trauma Critical Care Unit right after graduation. I still hold a place in my heart for my fellow warriors and "doc" looks out for his charges even til the very end.
